Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, commonly known as Lucan, was a prominent Roman poet born in Corduba, Hispania in 39 AD. He is best known for his epic poem, "Pharsalia," which details the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey. Despite his relatively short life, as he died at the young age of 26, Lucan's work had a profound impact on later literature and he became a key figure in the genre of epic poetry. His writing is characterized by its grand themes, rhetorical brilliance, and a unique style that breaks from traditional epic conventions, emphasizing moral and political issues over divine intervention.

Lucan's influences include Stoicism and the political climate of his time, particularly the tensions of the Roman Empire. His interactions with influential figures, such as the philosopher Seneca, who was also his uncle, shaped his literary output. Though faced with challenges, including political opposition, Lucan’s bold approach to storytelling and his innovative use of language have secured his place in the canon of classical literature. His works continued to inspire poets and writers throughout history, and his themes of power, betrayal, and fate resonate to this day.
