Reviews
Hey, Kiddo is the author's memoir about growing up with a mother who is a drug addict. He is raised by his grandparents and finds peace and joy in art. This graphic novel deals with the tough realities of life and defining "family" from an adolescent's perspective. I enjoyed reading this book. The artwork was different from the typical graphic novel, and I love the symbolism of the colors chosen. This novel broadened my perspective, as Jarrett's life was completely different from my childhood. It was like reading Jarrett's personal journal, with little bits and pieces from his childhood with his artwork and handwritten notes with his mom. It has a heart warming ending, but the content throughout the novel may be considered "PG-13". I would recommend this book to adolescents who might be in similar situations of struggling to identify who their family is. Content Warnings:> profanity > drug abuse > alludes to sexual content
