Saint Augustine of Hippo was a theologian and philosopher whose writings greatly influenced Western Christianity and philosophy. Born in 354 in Thagaste, present-day Algeria, Augustine was raised in a Christian household but initially led a life of indulgence and hedonism. His conversion to Christianity in 386 marked a turning point, leading him to become one of the most important figures in the development of Christian doctrine. He is best known for his works such as 'Confessions' and 'The City of God,' which explore themes of sin, grace, and the nature of God.
