Harry T. Burleigh was a prominent African American composer, arranger, and baritone, celebrated for his contributions to the genre of spirituals. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Burleigh's early exposure to music came from his grandmother, who sang spirituals, and he later studied at the National Conservatory of Music in New York City under Antonin Dvořák. His unique ability to blend classical music with African American folk traditions allowed him to elevate spirituals to a respected art form, making them accessible to broader audiences.
