Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, naturalist, and military commander who lived during the first century AD. He is best known for his work 'Natural History' (Naturalis Historia), which is considered one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire. This encyclopedic text covers a vast array of topics, including astronomy, geography, botany, and zoology. Pliny's writings reflect his keen observations of the natural world, as well as his efforts to compile the knowledge of his time, drawing on the works of earlier scholars and his own experiences.
