Lars Valerian Ahlfors was a prominent Finnish-American mathematician known for his significant contributions to complex analysis and conformal mapping. He was born in Helsinki and later moved to the United States, where he became a professor at Harvard University. Ahlfors was particularly recognized for his work on Riemann surfaces and for introducing the concept of conformal invariants. His groundbreaking research earned him the Fields Medal in 1936, making him one of the first recipients of this prestigious award.
