Alexander the Great was a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and one of history's most famous military commanders. Born in 356 BC in Pella, he was tutored by the philosopher Aristotle, which instilled in him a deep appreciation for Greek culture and philosophy. By the age of 20, Alexander ascended to the throne after the assassination of his father, King Philip II, and quickly set about expanding his empire. Throughout his life, he was known for his ambitious military campaigns, which stretched from Greece to Egypt and as far east as India, creating one of the largest empires in the ancient world before his untimely death at the age of 32.
