Born in Cesena, Italy, Da Ponte's early life was marked by a tumultuous series of events, including his expulsion from the Catholic priesthood due to his libertine lifestyle. He eventually moved to Vienna, where he met Mozart and began their fruitful partnership. Together, they created some of the most celebrated operas in the history of Western music, including "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "Così fan tutte."

Da Ponte's contributions to opera extended beyond his work with Mozart. After leaving Vienna, he emigrated to the United States, where he continued to write and teach Italian literature, and even opened a grocery store.
