Nāgārjuna was a prominent Indian philosopher and the founder of the Madhyamaka school of Mahayana Buddhism. His work significantly shaped Buddhist thought, particularly through his development of the concept of emptiness (śūnyatā) which asserts that all phenomena are interdependent and lack intrinsic essence. His most influential text, the 'Mūlamadhyamakakārikā' (Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way), explores the nature of reality, arguing against the extremes of existence and non-existence, which has profoundly impacted both Buddhist philosophy and practice.

Throughout his life, Nāgārjuna's ideas challenged the prevailing views of his time, making him a central figure in the history of Buddhist philosophy. His dialectical method and emphasis on the middle path influenced a wide range of thinkers and movements within Buddhism and beyond. His contributions are still studied and revered in contemporary Buddhist scholarship, highlighting his lasting legacy as a pivotal figure in the philosophical landscape of Buddhism.
