Philolaus was an ancient Greek philosopher and a prominent member of the Pythagorean school. He is best known for his contributions to the understanding of cosmology and mathematics, as well as for his advocacy of the theory that the Earth is not the center of the universe. Philolaus proposed that a central fire, which he referred to as the 'central hearth,' was the focal point around which the Earth and other celestial bodies revolved. This idea was a significant step in the development of astronomical thought, moving away from geocentrism.

His works primarily survive through fragments and are considered essential for understanding the evolution of ancient Greek philosophy. Philolaus's influence extended beyond his lifetime, impacting later thinkers and laying groundwork for future developments in both philosophy and science. Although much of his original writings have been lost, his ideas have been preserved in the works of later philosophers and historians, making him a pivotal figure in the history of Western thought.
