Pope Pius IX, born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, served as the 256th pope from 1846 until his death in 1878. His papacy is notable for the longest reign in the history of the papacy, lasting over 31 years. Pius IX was a pivotal figure during a time of significant political and social upheaval in Italy and Europe. He initially embraced liberal ideas but later adopted a more conservative stance, especially in response to the growing nationalism and secularism that characterized the period. He convened the First Vatican Council, which defined the doctrine of papal infallibility, a cornerstone of Catholic belief.
