Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher who founded the school of philosophy known as Epicureanism. He was born on the island of Samos around 341 BCE and later moved to Athens, where he established a community of followers dedicated to the pursuit of happiness through the cultivation of friendships and the practice of philosophy. Epicurus taught that pleasure was the highest good, but he emphasized that true pleasure comes from a simple life, characterized by moderation and the avoidance of unnecessary desires. He believed that understanding the natural world and reducing fear of the gods and death were essential for achieving peace of mind.

His philosophical contributions had a lasting impact on later thinkers, and his ideas on ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics were influential in the development of Western philosophy. Although some of his works were lost over time, his teachings were preserved through the writings of later philosophers and his followers. Epicurus's emphasis on pleasure, knowledge, and the importance of community continues to resonate in modern philosophical discussions.
