Empedocles was a pre-Socratic philosopher and a significant figure in ancient Greek thought. He is best known for his cosmogenic theory that proposed that all matter is composed of four roots: earth, air, fire, and water. These elements, according to Empedocles, are the foundational components of the universe. His philosophical ideas also introduced the concept of forces, which he called Love and Strife, that bring elements together or apart, respectively. This duality was a precursor to later notions of attraction and repulsion in physical science.

In addition to his contributions to philosophy, Empedocles was also a poet and a healer, blending science and spirituality in his teachings. His work had a profound impact on later philosophers, including Plato and Aristotle, who built upon his ideas. Although many of his writings are lost, fragments of his poetry and philosophical treatises survive, giving insight into his complex worldview and the early development of scientific thought in Western philosophy.
