Just finished for the 2nd time. I love this book! 7-24-26

July 23rd 2026

I have mixed feelings about this book,I think the initiation took a long time, and it was a bit draggy in my mind .I didn't like the romance much!! I want to read a book with the least amount of romance, and this book doesn't fall into this category! I have a lot of complaints to make about this book..

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

I've read this book before and I loved just as much if not more now then I did before. I love how the world is written in so much detail it almost feels real and I can imagine each part of the city being talked about.I liked the amount of romance, how it was there but it wasn't in your face and the main story was always to be in your faction and survive. It is a different take on dystopian genre and I love it. All the characters have there own stories that are unique to them. Each character changed and grew throughout the book but they also all faced challenges that put there life in danger.I'm excited to read the next book in the series as this book has left it open for either a continuation of tris and Fours story or a new story within the universe.

Always so good to deep dive back in this masterpiece

Okay okay. It’s only taken me… over a decade to read this book. And I definitely enjoyed it! I haven’t even seen the movies yet, either, so I’ll probably watch after reading.I love dystopian novels, I’m honestly surprised I hadn’t read this series several years ago when I was binging a bunch of books in this genre. I remember adding it to my list, I just never got around to it. Until now.Tris and Four… I love them. It is so easy to forget that they’re only 16 and 18. And how Four acts, like he’s been in the Dauntless faction for years rather than just 2, speaks to a complexity of his character deeper than should be normal for an 18 year old. I also figured out who he really was pretty fast (and no, I didn’t know that from seeing random clips and such from the series). The only thing really that I didn’t like was that it was hard to tell sometimes who Tris’s true allies are. Aside from Four, of course. Back and forth behavior aside, he didn’t want Eric to show any more interest in Tris than necessary. Christina and Will were fellow faction transfers but they’re loyalty didn’t feel quite to 100%. They didn’t betray her, but they also showed discontent when she was growing stronger instead of being happy for her growth. The ending was a rollercoaster and I need to jump in to the next book as soon as possible.

Cant say I love it, nor did I hate it. One thing for sure, Jeanine is the answer to Harry Potter's Dolores Umbridge
