A brilliant look into the treatment of working class people in the beginning of the 2010s.
It was very eye opening for me- someone who has grown up in a working class family, in an old mining town, with my dads side of the family who had all been miners pre-Thatcherism. I saw a lot of my dad in this book, I saw a lot of my brothers and my mum, I saw a lot of myself. I’ve seen a lot of people say this book is quite surface level and repetitive and whilst I do agree, I feel that it is also super effective in taking the things right in front of your face and saying “HEY. Look closer!!!!” And then you do and youre like, shit! Of course!
My dad was of course part of the “skilled” working class, he was a miner who came from a long paternal generation of miners, my mum was from a middle class family who didnt benefit like they did but still held onto thay idea of “respectability” and “acting above your wage”; I am the first in my family to go to university and graduate, when I was 13 I moved to an affluent area and spent the next few years of my life surrounded by people who had entirely different lives to me. This book has really helped me, however shallow it is, to really understand some of mine and my families places in society, and how I can converse with them better. Idk . I’m very happy with this book! I hope there are many more like it written
