الوصف

This is a reprint for the electronic reader of the classic 1894 biography of Robert E. Lee, by his nephew, Fitzhugh Lee, a cavalry officer in the Army of Northern Virginia under Lee's command. Not only did Fitzhugh serve in Lee's army, he was also a student at the United States Military Academy when Robert E. Lee served as Commandant there. And, as a member of the family, "Fitz," as he was called, had access to numerous Lee papers and an intimate knowledge of Lee, the man. This book is a mixture of genealogy of the Lee family, the personal letters of Lee, his career as an officer in the United States army, his family life, and of course his career as a Confederate general. Quite naturally Fitz Lee responds to Longstreet's criticisms of Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, and puts forth a convincing case. The editor has added notes on the life and career of Fitzhugh Lee, who was to later serve as governor of Virginia and in the Spanish-American War, at the conclusion of the book. Nothing has been edited out of this work, but rather it has been enhanced for the reading ease of the modern reader. Lee's foreign phrases, sprinkled liberally throughout the book, have been translated. There is a profuse addition of illustrations, which aid the reader in getting a mental picture of the many military officers, both Union and Confederate, mentioned by the author.
