The wife and two daughters of Reverend Thornton Randolph tell the story of their lives in a small Appalachian town in the mid-1950s. When his eldest daughter Abby becomes pregnant, the Reverend holds the neighbor’s son Buck Simpson responsible, marries them in a shotgun wedding and runs them out of town to hide the shocking truth.Six years later, Abby gathers her two children and enough courage to board a bus for home. She still fears her father, but once home, Abby learns her father is dead and only her emotionally cool mother and Abby’s autistic sister remain on the failing family farm. The return and murder of Buck Simpson and his ne’er-do-well crony brings suspicion on the entire Randolph family.Abby struggles to support her children, to win her mother’s love and to regain the love of her old beau—all against the backdrop of an economically depressed, geographically isolated Southwest Virginia town.
