الوصف
Set largely in Paris during the politically explosive 1820s and 1830s, Victor Hugo's epic follows the life of the former criminal Jean Valjean, an outcast of society, Valjean has repented his crimes, but is nevertheless pursued by the implacable detective Javert. In scenes of powerful drama and suspense, Valjean is chased through the sewers of Paris, while the July Revolution rages on overhead, and men and women are fighting--and dying--for political freedom.

Amazing story. 4.5/5 ⭐️ from me. The only thing keeping it from a 5 is that this is the first book in league with War and Peace and The Count of Monte Cristo that I would 100% advocate for reading an abridged version. Too many huge parts bloated this story and didn't add much to the plot such as the huge section in the beginning about the bishop, Waterloo, and the sewer systems. The parts of the actual story we are drip fed make it worth reading but i will definetly consider abridged versions of Hugos work in the future.

This is a must-read. Everyone is familiar with the broadway play, but the book is SO much better. Truly a classic!
