Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

Well.....that’s a few hours of my life I’m not getting back.Not that this book did anything offensive but all aspects of it; the pacing,the characters,the story line just all of it was lackluster. My biggest issue is the pacing. It felt like the author had a list of thing she absolutely had to include in this book but at the same time had a page limit because none of the plot points are done in a cohesive way and we’re rushing through each and every event without there ever being a proper build up. Not to mention that the relationships make no sense. There’s absolutely no chemistry between them. Hell there’s more chemistry between me and my responsibilities and I tend to ignore those unless the world forces my hand. So yeah the “love triangle” was not it specially since the first relationship wasn’t developed to begin with. Meira probably liked Mather because he was the only guy his age he could interact with but what do I know about crushes
This was just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill fantasy book. From the orphaned female protagonist, to the awful, cheesy love triangle. There were bits and pieces of this book that I enjoyed, but there were also parts that made my roll my eyes so hard, I think they might be permanently stuck that way. I mean there was nothing extraordinary or mind blowing about this book. It was just like every other YA fantasy. You know, the ones that have a bit of magic, an orphan protagonist who feels out of place, only to discover that they’re “the chosen one” or whatever, Even down to the terribly cliche love-triangle. This book just didn’t have that oomf that I always look for when I read.Thankfully the characters were pretty enjoyable and fun, as was the setting (although it was pretty basic), and I feel like this would be about 2.5-3 Stars.
