Reading Reference Materials

Students need to know what kinds of information are available in reference materials and how to find that information quickly. This book consists of activities and explorations designed to familiarize your students with dictionaries, encyclopedias, and atlases.

This book is divided into three sections. Each section contains a table of contents, teaching ideas and extension activities.
* Dictionary Dynamics - reproducibles in five different formats give hands-on dictionary practice covering word meaning and spelling.
* Encyclopedia Explorations - includes 19 "Scavenger Hunt" pages which require students to use an encyclopedia to locate information. Tasks involve finding specific facts, reading charts, maps, and drawings, and practicing higher-level thinking skills.
* Atlas Adventures - a variety of activities intended to encourage students to be comfortable and fluent in using an atlas.
Special Dictionary - "Label It," students look up words, read the meanings, and then label the correct part of a picture. Unusual words are used - snood, proboscis, crenelation;
Encyclopedia - make "info-mobiles"; atlas - "Create a Country," a small group activity. Detailed answer key included. All 64 pages perforated for easy removal.
