الوصف

"I can envision no more perfect visual representation of my Dune world than John Schoenherr's careful and accurate illustrations." -Frank Herbert.

Set in the far future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary dynasties are controlled by noble houses that owe an allegiance to the imperial House Corrino, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides (the heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides & heir of House Atreides) as he & his family accept control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the "spice" melange, the most important & valuable substance in the cosmos. The story explores the complex, multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology & human emotion, as the forces of the empire confront each other for control of Arrakis.

Published in 1965, it won the Hugo Award in 1966 & the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel. Dune is frequently cited as the world's best-selling sf novel.

Cover painting and interior colour & black & white illustrations by John Schoenherr.

Artist John Schoenherr is a winner of the Hugo award for his illustrations. He created the illustrations for the original magazine serials of Herbert's Dune trilogy, as well as the illustrations for the original hardcover and paperback editions of the work.

عرض الكل

This might be the greatest piece of science fiction ever written, not just because of the lengths the author goes to describe each character with depth and state their intentions in such a manner that is relatable to the reader. The complexity of the planet of Arrakis and the total immersion of the reader into Fremen culture, as well as the detailed descriptions of political tensions bring this book's world building to the next level. It is astounding how one author can create such a complex world from scratch and write about every aspect of an imaginary culture and way of life.

This is a classic si-fi novel. There is a large amount of world building spread over 6 novels, prequels (The whole 9 yards) and Yes! Worms! lots of them. There is a reason why lots of peeps on GR read this. It's good! Not five star. I recommend this to people.

I don't like sand. It's coarse, and rough, and irritating, and it gets everywhere.
