Set in the prewar Indochina of Marguerite Duras's childhood, this is the haunting tale of a tumultuous affair between an adolescent French girl and her Chinese lover. In spare yet luminous prose, Duras evokes life on the margins of Saigon in the waning days of France's colonial empire, and its representation in the passionate relationship between two unforgettable outcasts.
Long unavailable in hardcover, this edition of The Lover includes a new introduction by Maxine Hong Kingston that looks back at Duras's world from an intriguing new perspective--that of a visitor to Vietnam today. "From the Hardcover edition."

This is a semi-autobiographical book about a 27 yr old chinese man in the 1930s who falls in love with a 15 yr old white girl in the indochinese french colonies. I feel like the author - the girl in the sto4y - romanticizes and/or pities the man too much, cinsidering he fell in love with a child, but towards the end of the book, this attitude changes slightly.I didn't "love" this book, but it wasn't a bad read either.
