The Night Shift
The Night Shift is a sit-com of six episodes from Ian Newton, author of the best selling published books, Dustbingate and Hessle Road Scallywags and many other publications. It is about the hard gritty world of working people, this particular world being that of the night shift.
It is based on Ian’s own experience of working permanent night shift in various factories in the Hull area. The particular appeal of ‘The Night Shift’, however, is that it will be a familiar world to any who have been in this situation; readers will identify with the characters that Ian has created because they are all based on real characters Ian has worked night shifts with.
‘The Night Shift’ is essentially about the bar room philosophers and barrack room lawyers who can put the world to rights on the back of a fag packet and still have room to make a note of next days favourite in the 2.30 at Epsom. It is about making mischief and having a bit of a laugh so that the long hours of a seemingly interminable shift becomes endurable.
The world of the night shift worker is a strange place (as anyone who has worked there will know): it breeds its own special characters who find the darkness (and of course the absence of bosses!) an excuse to have some fun at the company’s expense and usually to nick whatever is not bolted down and some stuff that is. Life is one big wind up or one long laugh from start to end of the shift.
As there are some people in Hull who may recognise themselves in the scripts (and to protect the hard back publisher from slander or nefarious compensation claims (so sadly prevalent claims in today’s shallow no-win-no-fee culture!) names have been changed to protect the guilty and also to give no clue to Humberside Police still investigating the theft of building material and an industrial cement mixer from the docks in 1998.
The publisher is sure that once this book is published there will be a massive crackdown on the theft of toilet rolls, light bulbs and the aforementioned odd cement mixer on night shifts across the country.
It can be a long, tireless and thankless task “working” the night shift. Whilst the nation sleeps, these are the men, and millions like them, that keep the economy of Britain moving.
This is their story, the story of men at the sharp end industry, always willing to go the extra mile for the company, after another cup of tea.
Reviews of the Night Shift by prominent and influential reviewers.
“Real gritty stuff which made me rock with hysterical laughter just
reading them.”
TV producer of the classic ‘Rising Damp’ Peter Boden,
“One of the best writers of Northern gritty comedy dialogue. I was on a train and found myself unable to contain myself and was laughing out loud as I read.”
Oscar winning producer Ruth Kenley-Letts.
“I like the scripts, nice dialogue, funny in a surreal way, reminds me a bit of [Samuel] Beckett and Charlie Chaplin with a sprinkling of seventies sitcom such as On the buses or Love thy neighbour.”
Guardian journalist Simon Hattenstone.
“Pacy, racy and lively, very funny. Fools and Horses mixed with the Rag Trade.”
Award winning journalist, writer and former Lobby correspondent for The Independent. Christian Wolmar-
“I almost wet myself as I read one of the scripts.”
Matthew Chaplin, script editor Tiger Aspect Films
“Extremely funny with factory floor characters so real they seem surreal. But like all good humour rooted in experience it retains a Kes-like authenticity so difficult to capture. This should be a prime-time TV series.”
