عرض الكلI really didn't enjoy reading this book at all. It was a struggle for me to keep going, hoping that something interesting would happen. The book promised a grand war where Frances had to choose between her fellow witches and the love of her life, but it was all very underwhelming. For almost 80% of the book, nothing significant really happened, and then the war was over in a snap, followed by a predictable "happily ever after" ending that we all know won't last because there's a second book, but I have no plans of reading it. To me, it was a decent book at best, nothing more. I had such high expectations for this book, but unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. Maybe if the book was presented as the witches doing witchy things, I would have enjoyed it more. But even then, it still doesn't add up.
2.5⭐️I wanted desperately to love this book. In the end, it was okay and not something I’ll read again. The premise is good, a witchy historical tale about a girl trying to figure out what happened to her brother, suddenly finding out she has magic. Instead of going to prison for murder as she was fearing, she’s taken to a sanitarium under the guise of being deathly ill when in fact it’s a school for girls, all of them witches. But then, the story starts to fall flat. Frances begins to descend into depression and nothing of note is happening… I just wanted something to happen. Then she meets Finn. The boy who was friends with her brother, the boy she feels drawn to. A romance starts to blossom between the two and you think all is going well, she’s learning proper magic, not just to be a quiet housewife, when things instead turn south and darling Finn becomes this psychotic controlling bastard. I mean, I saw that coming, I don’t know why it took her so long to see it.Most the time while listening to this, I wasn’t quite sure what exactly was supposed to be happening, or I felt a bit bored with the plot. Things felt a bit rushed at the end with Finn suddenly no longer the sweet boy Frances was falling for. Not sure if I will listen to the sequel or not.
