الوصف

Things Fall Apart" tells two intertwining stories, both centering on Okonkwo, a "strong man" of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first, a powerful fable of the immemorial conflict between the individual and society, traces Okonkwo's fall from grace with the tribal world. The second, as modern as the first is ancient, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world with the arrival of aggressive European missionaries. These perfectly harmonized twin dramas are informed by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul. "From the Trade Paperback edition.

In this historical fiction, we follow Okonkwo's journey through life as colonialism comes to (British) Nigeria. This is a book people should read.  It is accessible to the average reader and, in my opinion, would captivate even readers who don't normally read historical fiction. Chinua Achebe, in addition to being called the father of African literature, won the Man Booker International prize in 2007, in addition to a multitude of other accolades.  His way of writing breaks down cultural differences and explains the dynamics of the villages, the elder system and meaning behind, as well as the process of, title acquisition, so that even I can understand the society. Presenting this alongside the arrival of colonizers and impact that was caused was emotional and raw.Written in English, we're able to receive the exact wording, metaphors, and symbolism that he was trying to convey as opposed to having it translated. Translation can change the original message substantially, so receiving it this way felt, to me, even more impactful as a direct conveyance from the author.Having said that, I assume some different  metaphors and other literary devices would've been used in the original Igbo, so it would've been interesting, in an alternate reality, to read an English translation of an Igbo version.  I would really recommend this book to everyone.  Maybe older high school aged and above.  I wouldn't say this is age appropriate for middle schoolers

Every time I reread and teach this book, I’m reminded of the power of Achebe’s language and story.
