In the course of a career which lasted no less than forty years (dating it from 1620, when he attained his majority) Velasquez might easily have produced more than the hundred or so of authentic works that are at present attributed to him. Nevertheless, the tendency of modern criticism has been to diminish rather than to increase the list of his achievements, and the discovery of fresh examples is altogether disproportionate to the eagerness with which they are sought for.
