The novel, with the background of contemporary life of ancient capital Xi’an which has long history and culture, narrates daily life of "four celebrities", namely Zhuangzhi Die who is idle literal writers, Gong Jing Yuan who is calligrapher, Wang Ximin who is a painter and Ruan Zhifei who is an artist; show all kinds of landscape of "Dead city" which is the western capital. It reflect the author’s traces from Zhuang Zhidie who is the core character of the novel. Zhuang Zhidie owns the following complex characteristics which was given by modern urban life to a celebrity: does not like the binding, free and easy, likes to talk, and full of knowledge, owns Wei-Jin demeanor. However, these images, the desolate sound of the ancient city wall in the night, but in fact fit the lonely pain of his heart.
