This was fun... until it wasn't.
The fake dating trope? Loved it. Simon and Daphne's banter carried this book for me, and the Bridgerton family dynamic had me smiling more than once. Lady Whistledown was easily one of the highlights too.
But somewhere along the way, the romance lost me. One minute they're pretending, the next they're hopelessly in love, and I never really bought the transition.
And then that scene happened.
I don't care what year this book is set in or who the victim is—reproductive coercion and violating someone's consent is not romantic. It completely soured the relationship for me, especially when the narrative seemed more interested in brushing it aside than actually acknowledging how messed up it was.
It's frustrating because there was a genuinely enjoyable romance underneath all of that. Simon's backstory was heartbreaking, the chemistry was there, and I had a good time for most of the book.
In the end, though, I walked away feeling like this could've been so much better if it hadn't relied on such a terrible plot point to force character growth.
This wasn’t good at all. I think Julia Quinn could write a contemporary romance, but historical, nope. She tries to incorporate language and words from the 1800s, but it feels super forced and unnatural. Complicated words are coming up in sentences that feel very modern and sometimes, the characters talk as if they were born in the 21st century. The writing style was weird and there were some incoherencies, which I was able to figure out and understand because I have watched the series, but with the book alone it is not enough… For example, there is Whistledown, we are told a few times that she has the power to ruin people with her column, but I was able to believe it only because I have seen the 3 seasons… In the book, she never actually ruined anyone or wrote anything detrimental to anyone. (because no, writing that the Bridgertons all look alike and it cannot be doubted that they all have the same parents, that there are no illegitimate children, is not an insult) In my opinion, this is not a love story between a Duke and a Lady, but it is a story between two unwell people with their problems, problems which they decided to share and blame on the other person rather than sorting it out and working on themselves before starting this “relationship”. Daphne is used to being the first girl in the family, always cared for by her mother and 3 older brothers, she cannot understand “no” and things not going her way, hence her not understanding Simon’s issues and not giving him the time he needed. Simon is clearly traumatised but he doesn’t really want to admit it and therefore cannot figure things out for himself and get better. Moral of the story, they both need therapy and we all know that only meeting up in a park and saying everything is now alright isn’t enough. We are told in the epilogue that they have 4 kids, but my question is how will the kids grow up in a dysfunctional family like this one? Their parents might have figured that they had issues to be fixed but never actually fixed them before having the kids. I gave it 2 stars because I still quite enjoyed my time reading it, but I think it’s also just because I watched the series and saw it play in my head, it compensated for the lack of atmosphere written by the author. And I know that I will still read the other books because I want to see if the writing got better and leave another chance to the other Bridgerton siblings since I know that even in the Netflix series, I hated Daphne and season 1 was my least favourite.
Primeira frase: O nascimento de Simon Arthur Henry Fitzranulph Basset, o conde de Clyvedon, foi recebido com muita alegria. Última frase: Ah, gentil leitor, esta autora fica feliz em contar... Bom não é tudo isso que eu esperava, mas gostei do livro, leitura rápida, dinâmica, muitos pontos divertidos, espero que os proximoa livroa sejam melhores, tinha umas coisas muito difíceis de ler acho que por ser um livro "antigo" a narrativa da vida das mulheres era muito diferente de hj, tem umas falas meios problemáticas. Morri de rir com os irmãos ABC Bridgerton kkkk Anthony, Benedict e Colin, meu preferido ate agora é o Colin, e eu amo a Violet também. Não achei legal o que a Daphne fez com o Simon, não foi certo, não foi legal. Mas num geral o livro é legal e a série adaptada da Netflix é bem parecida com o enredo do livro.
2.5Es un libro bastante interesante, porque a quien no le entretiene los chismes de familias de la alta sociedad de los 1800, y si bien es interesante y atrapante, hay algunas cosas muy contradictorias, que van desde momentos o diálogos en particular hasta la personalidad en general de los personajes, en especial de los protagonistas, también hay muchas cosas sin sentido, además de que algo que me molestó mucho fue que en los últimos 5 capítulos ambos protagonistas abusaron del otro, de varias formas si soy sincera, pero más específicamente en el ámbito sexual, y si bien es entendible que para la época en que está inspirado el libro sería de lo más normal e incluso todos estos personajes se podrían considerar algo avanzados en su forma de ser y pensar, sigue siendo molesto que hayan abusado del otro y se tome como algo normal o como si no hubiera pasado nada, y después se la sigan dando de moralistas haciendo como que nunca harían algo que a su pareja no le guste ni lo obligarían a hacer nada. Pero fuera de eso, el libro estuvo entretenido, tanto que lo escuché (lo escuché en un audiolibro) en menos de un día, además que atribuyo gran parte de mi mala experiencia a la narradora, que claramente no sabe leer ni expresar los signos de puntuación, incluso estoy segura de que ella tampoco sabía qué estaba leyendo en ciertas partes

I love Daphne’s spunk throughout it all, and the loving yet nosiness of the Bridgerton family. A comical and spicy read! With plenty of gossip stirred up by the infamous Lady Whistledown.
I confess that I picked these books up after the huge success of the adaptation currently taking the world by storm. Rather than Instagram made me do it, it was a 'I can't look anywhere without seeing the Duke' moment and here we are.I read it in a day, I discovered that I do like historical romance, and that the Bridgerton family are hilarious.The world-building is wonderful and Regency London comes to life from Quinn's writing and the elegance of the aristocracy is one that is mixed with intrigue, gossip and trouble. (I'm looking at you Lady Featherington who I both love and loathe already).The story of Simon, Duke of Hastings is beautifully told and Quinn cleverly highlights the reality of expectation and appearance and how it affected those who many would look up to. Yes, the Bridgerton series is one filled with romance but within the stsged fainting of eligible young ladies new to society and young men wanting to flee from the prospect of marriage? There is an observation of society that is a harsh reminder that these people may have not wanted for anything, but perfection was regarded as a necessity at all costs and Simon has to fight both the weight of his inheritance as the heir to one of the most respected titles in English society and the expectation and abhorrent neglect of an absentee father who puts title before love. I was cheering for Simon from the moment of his birth and his nurse as he took on the world around him. I also cannot blame his disgust of English society and the necessity of appearance over reality. He may well be an arrogant SOB but he has his reasons and I only wish others could have realised his act was only that - the man needs a hug and a reminder he's a decent man on a regular basis. (Also, seriously I wanted to see the nurse come into her own but sadly, I was denied that so in my head she's off living her best life with not a care in the world and is surrounded by luxury and is truly happy for standing by the Duke.) The Bridgerton Family are a lot. I do love the idea of the alphabetised naming because Lord Almighty, there is a lot of them. Daphne is the epitome of a debutante who knows her role in life, and I love how she's also one of the boys with her brothers as much as she is able. Each character created by Julia Quinn is so well-written that you can imagine them at the many balls, ladies with their fans fluttering delicately and men watching the ever-present Mothers eagerly introducing their daughters as if shown off prized items at a market. I'm not going to lie, it sounds like an elegant nightmare to me. No one I imagine, wants to be forced into being the perfect match for another rather than themselves.That's what I did love about Simon and Daphne, they are polar opposite to one another; but like magnets they are drawn to one another regardless of Simon's insistence that he can never submit to society's expectations. Such a silly Duke - doesn't he know that the more you fight something the more you see it fully and realise you handy known all there was to it?I really enjoyed The Duke and I, I am going to be starting The Viscount Who Loved Me and learn more about the Bridgerton Family who are anomaly in the very world they exist in. I'm very glad I got curious as I truly believe the book is far better than the adaptation that drew me in.The Duke and Daphne truly deserve their happiness, and I loved how they went about their unplanned romance. The story is sweet, with a plethora of incredible, well-rounded characters who all add so much to their story with no one seeming to be there just for the sake of it which is something I always hate. Lady Whistledown's Society Papers are fun and remind me of Gossip Girl's alerts but are so much .. more if you know what I mean. She's witty, and I can only imagine the excitement as pennies were exchanged for the latest gossip about places people couldn't go, and people who were the who's who of the Season.I'm going to enjoy this series- because who doesn't love a little disappearance to another world every now and again?
I'll not say that this book is not problematic because well it's. There are a lot of scenes which are disgusting and awful and the author could have done it so much better but except those i think the book is overall okish if you can ignore the disturbing & selfish couple they were at heart.
En comparación, la historia me gusta mucho más en versión literaria. He notado muchos momentos cómicos por parte de la familia Bridgerton y eso hace una lectura muy ligera y amena.Respecto a la pareja, los dos cometen errores y poco a poco van descubriendo sus sentimientos a la par que lidian con sus propios problemas. He notado mucha química entre ellos y me ha gustado :)
