The book reflects the current and future changing position of information technology, divided into three technology, the applications, and human aspects. Each part is individually introduced and includes background material to access the text to non-specialist readers. References point the way to topics of further interest. The authors, all experienced researchers and practitioners including Iann Barron, Michael Jackson, Brian Oakley and Alex d'Agapeyeff, amongst others, have reached a careful balance between work in industry and academia, some of which has already born fruit in the commercial world and some of which will shortly do so. The book is a distillation of the work of distinguished and respected figures in the IT world, and will do much to keep others in touch.
