A botched suicide attempt in the magnificent Death Valley desert leads to tragi-comical confusions and extraordinary personal transformations as the characters – the attempted suicide, his wife, his business partner and a romantic, lonely woman – discover sudden, temporary liberation from unsatisfactory lives. An hour's entertainment (50 pages), moving swiftly in an action style adopted from the movies. Fun and serious at once, providing plenty to reflect on – life and death, true love and disappointment, and the tiny gap dividing the romantic from the everyday. From the author of Port Royal and Practical Alchemy.
