In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true.

Okay. Not great. Plot devices are never fully realized. The ending left me feeling as though it was a waste of time.

Cosmic horror collides with the life of an ordinary fisherman. If you enjoyed Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, John Langan’s The Fisherman will be right up your alley. While I found the writing itself somewhat lacking, the atmosphere was nothing short of incredible. The story of two men who each lose loved ones in tragic ways and then see their grief embodied in the monstrous presence of the novel, is hauntingly beautiful.3.85/5 would recommend
