In 1845, Sir John Franklin sailed to the Arctic, in search of the North West Passage, with two ships. They did not return, and despite searches no trace of them could be found. Now, Lady Franklin is sending the 177 ton Fox in a last bid to find her husband or any trace of his expedition. This book takes the form of a diary kept by the youngest member of the crew, a mere boy. They are based on the actual journals of the Fox's captain. The boy's journal, kept over the two years of the voyage, is a moving and exciting story as he describes the hazards, lessons to be learned, disappointment and successes of life on the ship and on the ice. Map and illustrations.
