Stephen is driving with his mother and brother through a dark wood, reputed to be the place where highwaymen held up travellers in the past, when the car breaks down. They set out to walk to his grandmother's house and Stephen, lagging behind, has astrange meeting with two highwaymen who disappear into the mist before reaching the others.
