Amazing story. 4.5/5 ⭐️ from me. The only thing keeping it from a 5 is that this is the first book in league with War and Peace and The Count of Monte Cristo that I would 100% advocate for reading an abridged version. Too many huge parts bloated this story and didn't add much to the plot such as the huge section in the beginning about the bishop, Waterloo, and the sewer systems. The parts of the actual story we are drip fed make it worth reading but i will definetly consider abridged versions of Hugos work in the future.

This is my first Victor Hugo book that I’ve read. The amount of pages is the same as War and Peace by Tolstoi. But every single page worth reading it. I was a captive of this book for a couple of month. Since the beginning of pandemia. I have never thought about death such amount of time as I did while reading les miserables. The amount of characters is tremendous. Almost every character is very charismatic. The range is huge; from Jean Voiljean to Tenardie. From Cosette to Eponine. They are so different and at the same time so bright and give readers a ton of thoughts to think about. By the way, my favorite character is Eponine. I would rather marry her than Cosette. Even her name sounds more beautiful than Cosette”s name. I became very suspicious in the middle of the book towards Cosette. I don’t even know why. I just had this feeling, that something is wrong. On the other hand, Eponine suffered more than Cosette, even though she grew up in better conditions. All actions of Eponine show how strong her love was. She even gave the address of Cosette to Marius. Her love is sincere. In my opinion Victor Hugo put too much ordeals on Jean Valjeans shoulders. From the beginning of his life, he suffered too much and unfairly. And reading how he was ending his life, brought some tears in my eyes. It just showed me how we mistreat our parents, we just don’t give back enough love to them especially when we are in love with someone. After this story I more than convinced that the purest love that exist on earth, its not between man and woman, but how parents love their children. Such love lasts till the end.
