Odd Man Out

Chief Inspector Zabinski, of Scotland Yard (Public Affairs), has slipped away from Kabul to Honolulu to recover from a ‘friendly fire’ USN Seals gunshot wound—only to find the Royal Navy’s Commodore Neilson asking him to take on special checking complaints of Royal Australian Navy petty card sharping in the Pearl Officers Club, and then protecting a visiting Air Vice Marshall who’s helping to set up SOPA—a South Pacific Alliance for the scattered islands; however, like the card games, not much goes right.

Amid the frustration and turmoil, Zabinski the wandering bachelor finds himself falling in love with Pearl Harbor’s A/Chief Nurse and going for the full treatment. But the card-sharping RAN officer is also interested in the Chief Nurse, and when he’s shot in a deadly confrontation, there’s not much evidence to favour Zabinski at the Los Angeles Board of Inquiry—but he looks back to his greatest discoveries— mellow Hawaii, a new family, and relief about lost youth.
