Overcoming Nimbyism, takes a humorous sideways look at one family’s attempt at getting planning permission to build a house in their own back garden. This is something the Government has termed “garden grabbing” in an attempt to demonise it, which seems to have worked in this cul-de-sac.
Nimby (Not In My Back Yard):
a person who objects to the siting of something perceived as unpleasant or hazardous in their own neighbourhood, especially while raising no such objections to similar developments elsewhere.
Arthur Bakes feels invincible. After surviving a serious illness he decides to build a house in his back garden, but his neighbours are not happy, actually they are livid and gang together to halt the application. The elderly residents of the cul-de-sac do not want another house build under any circumstances. Arthur is flanked on one side by Dick Stroker, an ageing porn star and on the other by the Reverend Popple the local Vicar. They are joined in the "triangle of terror" by Bob Apple, an egotistical Fruit and Veg seller, with a taste for exotic fruit. They form a formidable team, but can they win through against the Bakes’? However, the Bakes' know a thing or two and Arthur’s wife Mildred is something of a dark horse, can they keep one step ahead of the NIMBYs?
Stroker threatens the Bakes’ with court action because he thinks their trees are making his house fall down, this is all a diversionary tactic. But when they remove the trees to improve their chances getting permission and save Stroker's house, they get a full view of Stroker’s garden and are shocked by his summer evening antics with his wife Milly Munter, who is a walking warning for anyone thinking of cosmetic surgery. Stroker is very unhappy about the trees being removed as he now gets no privacy. He decides to lead an action group against the Bakes by getting a petition together and arranging neighbourhood meetings to organise their resistance to the planning application.
It starts to become personal and the whole world seems to be against the Bakes; the neighbours, the local council, several Councillors and even the Civic Society, who like nothing more than interfering. Due to the neighbour's objections the plans have to go before the Town Planning Committee where 12 geriatric Councillors reject the Bakes’ proposal 12-0. Disaster.
The Bakes’ don’t give up there and take their appeal to the Planning Inspectorate as they feel the decision was politically motivated, it is their last hope.
No one wants to lose a battle against a porn star and a Vicar, but how far is Arthur willing to go? Will the Reverend Popple regret his threat of “Over my dead body”? Will ageing porn star Dick Stroker ever be able to show himself in public again?
