Beschreibung

Sentaro finds himself at a crossroads, grappling with the weight of his choices and the shadows of his past. His life as a once-aspiring writer has unraveled into a daily struggle, punctuated by his quiet solitude in a small shop where he serves dorayaki—sweet pancakes filled with red bean paste. The monotony of his existence is soon disturbed by the arrival of Tokue, an elderly woman whose passion for making the perfect sweet bean paste reignites something within Sentaro.

As they form an unlikely partnership, Tokue's wisdom and zest for life inspire him to envision a brighter future beyond his self-imposed limitations. The delicate art of crafting traditional treats becomes a metaphor for healing and redemption as they bond over stories, secrets, and shared dreams. With Tokue's guidance, Sentaro begins to confront his past mistakes and the societal prejudices that linger in the shadows of their lives.

Amidst the challenges they face, their friendship flourishes, highlighting the importance of human connection and the simple joys of life. The sweet aroma of the dorayaki wafts through the air, inviting patrons not just for a taste of nostalgia but for an experience that transcends generational divides. As Sentaro's journey unfolds, he grapples with his identity, exploring what it means to embrace imperfections and strive for something greater.

Through this heartfelt narrative, the transformative power of companionship and culinary artistry is revealed, reminding readers that while one can be weighed down by failures, there is always a path toward renewal and self-discovery. The story resonates with timeless themes of hope, resilience, and the sweetness that life can offer even in the face of adversity.

Salah satu buku yang heartwarming yet full of sorrow menurutku. Hangat, tapi sedih. Mungkin kalau bacanya bukan pas malam-malam, aku akan nangis. Hehehe. I'm weak for things like this, indeed. Worth to read if you need something that can make you grateful for what you have now.

Having watched the film adaptation of Sweet Bean Paste and deeply loving it, I went into the audiobook with high expectations. Unfortunately, the book didn’t live up to the film. This is one of those rare cases where I feel the film is stronger than the original work. The adaptation added emotional depth that made the story more powerful. On the page, some moments felt repetitive and less impactful, whereas the film conveyed the characters’ inner struggles more vividly and with greater sensitivity.
