Beschreibung

In the lavish and vibrant city of Orléans, where beauty is a form of power, Camellia Beauregard stands out among the Belles. Belles are not merely celebrated for their looks; they possess the unique ability to manipulate beauty itself, altering appearances to fit the desires of the elite. Camellia, driven by her ambitions and her yearning to be the most sought-after Belle, navigates a society obsessed with perfection.

However, her journey reveals that the world of beauty is fraught with dark secrets and cutthroat competition. As she delves deeper into the complexities of her role, she uncovers the sacrifices made to maintain such an image, including the pressure to conform to fickle standards defined by the ruling class. Camellia's internal struggle grows as she grapples with her identity amidst the superficial expectations of those around her.

Throughout her trials, she learns that true beauty comes from more than just physical appearance; it is rooted in authenticity and strength. As she challenges the status quo, Camellia must decide what kind of Belle she aspires to be and what choices she is willing to make in a society that prizes beauty above all else.

3.5 Stars is my rating for this book."You were put on this Earth by the Goddess of Beauty with one job, so make everyone else beautiful." That is kind of the basis of this book. The Goddess of Beauty fell in love with the God of the Sky and when she spent more time with their children he became jealous and cursed them all to be ugly. You with me? Okay now there is an elite group of girls who are beautiful and unique and they are called The Belles. Camellia is one of them and the book is told in her point of view.My biggest issue with this book was the pacing. The start had it off to a running start and I was really loving it but by the middle there were points that I just didn't care. I can honestly say I only really jumped back into loving it again at chapter 35 when things really started to take off and it was go go go from there. The end had me so on board that I need the next book like yesterday. Now this book is a young adult book so it does have its flaws. It's terribly cliche when it comes to some of the characters. I won't say anything more because it will spoil but just... yeah some of them and what they do you can find in just about any YA novel.I liked Camellia but she annoyed me at points. She was just so daft for "one of the smartest Belles". And the importance of keeping how her gifts work a secret was something stressed to her from the time she was little and yet all it took was a pretty boy to bat his eyes and it was all over. So yeah, she annoyed me even if she was a well written character.Honestly I took a star off because of the pacing and because I wasn't expecting this book to be as dark as it actually was. Yes it's about plastic surgery and how beauty ruins the world but it still looked like it was going to be a fun opening to a series and as series go further they tend to get darker. I just hope they're done well.
