During this time, Castro’s Communist government devised a strategy to assist the communist movement in Angola. They dubbed it “Operation Carlotta”. The recruits were ushered off to basic training camps totally unaware of what lay before them. When their training was complete they were given ice cream and loaded into air conditions buses without a word. They had no idea where they were going. Their families were not informed.
There were a lot of people that did not agree with the government decision to get involved. Some of these people were high in Castro’s administration. One in particular decided to do something about it; Hector defected to the United States. He had to leave Cuba rather quickly and could not take his family. The US agreed that his wife and twelve year old daughter would be retrieved at a later time.
