Beschreibung

Beneath the surface of the ocean lies a world rich in culture and history, shaped by the resilience of its inhabitants. This narrative delves into the lives of a unique community: the water-breathing descendants of African slave women who were thrown overboard during the transatlantic voyage. In their underwater realm, they have forged a society that balances the weight of ancestral pain with the hope for a future.

Amidst the vibrant aquatic life, this community upholds its traditions while adapting to the distinct challenges of their environment. As they navigate the complexities of their identity, the characters confront themes of trauma and survival. Their stories intertwine with the legacy of their forebears, who endured unimaginable struggles, creating a tapestry of narratives that explore themes of belonging and heritage.

This journey into the depths becomes a powerful exploration of what it means to be connected to one's roots, even when those roots are buried beneath an ocean of sorrow. Each character's experience reflects a broader commentary on history, memory, and the quest for self-discovery, making them relatable even beyond their extraordinary circumstances.

Ultimately, the tale is one of empowerment, shedding light on voices that have long been submerged. It invites readers to reflect on resilience and the transformative power of community while pushing the boundaries of genre storytelling. In this underwater odyssey, the characters not only seek to understand their past but also to redefine their future amidst the waves.

I liked the ending it was cute. The fact I read it for school might have ruined the reading experience a little bit.

Beautiful and unique storytelling that covers some really tough themes (history, identity, collective trauma, etc.) for diasporic Africans. Wasn't really sure what to make of the Guillermo del Toro Shape of Water love story tho...
