The robots were a Stakhanovite creation–built in tens of thousands in Soviet Russia to assist and inspire the workers in the 1930s.
An emblem of nobility and tireless work, they yet proved inefficient, and were gradually phased out as they seized up and fell into disrepair.
Now, in a Siberian salt mine, prisoners of the state still toil, and amongst them one last robot labors–pulling the carriages that transport the men deep under the ground, it is jokingly nicknamed The Engine.
When the old mine collapses they know nobody will rescue them, their lives have no value to the state. It is here that something remarkable happens…
