Gunnar is a cool black boy from white Santa Monica, whose mother moves the family to a black neighbourhood but fails to tell her children what this might entail. Gunnar believes he may not last beyond 13, so teaches himself to walk and talk like a homeboy and so maybe survive a little more easily.
