Strindberg described A Dream Play as his favourite among his works. Ingmar Bergman's production of it, in his own adaptation, was one of the most exciting events of recent World Theatre seasons in London. The translator, Michael Meyer, who received the Gold Medal of the Swedish Academy for his earlier volume of Strindberg interpretations, describes in his introduction the play's genesis and early reception, and analyses Bergman's treatment of it.
