We find Wolfe not in a good mood and sounding off at Archie Goodwin. There's a meat shortage in the US in 1946, just after WW2, and he doesn't like it. The well-known mobster, Dazy Perrit, picks that moment to visit and request the great detective's help. Perrit needs protection for his daughter and another woman, supposedly his daughter too; she's the one who is demanding ever-rising amounts of money. Is it blackmail?
