Descripción

Another sweeping novel from the No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author…A traveller in a time of discovery, the greatest gardening pioneer of his day, yet a man of humble John Tradescant’s story is a mirror to the extraordinary age in which he lives.

As gardener and confidante to Sir Robert Cecil, Tradescant is well placed to observe the social and political changes that are about to sweep through the kingdom. While his master conjures intrigues at Court, Tradescant designs for him the magnificent garden at Hatfield, scouring the known world for ever more wonderful new varieties of fruit and flower, the first horse chestnuts to be cultivated in England, even larches from Russia.

Moving to the household of the flamboyant Duke of Buckingham, Tradescant witnesses at first hand the growing division between Parliament and the people; and the most loyal of servants must find a way to become an independent squire.

I had inadvertently read the sequel [b:Virgin Earth|16184|Virgin Earth|Philippa Gregory|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1347745424s/16184.jpg|1628125] before I read this one but it didn't matter. This story covers the period from 1603 - 1638 during the reign of King James and King Charles I but focuses on the life of John Tradescant the gardener to lords.I really enjoy Phillipa Gregory's style of writing and her storytelling. I like stories that cover long time periods to reveal the whole life of a character. I read up about the historical characters after finishing a book to see the accuracy of the story. Obviously there will be some level of artistic licence but generally I am pleased to see that events appear close to reality. All in all another very enjoyable book, I was taken in enough so that I went out and bought loads of tulips (the book made me look at tulips in a different light!).
