Aiken continues The Watsons, begun by Jane Austen in 1804. After living with an aunt for fourteen years, Emma, the youngest of a large family, returns home to face a spinsterhood of genteel poverty with her favorite sister, Elizabeth. It falls to them to deal with the foibles and misadventures of their siblings, assorted relatives, and eccentric neighbors.
