When war breaks out in 1939, Sally Kennedy and Tessa Kilbride have already enjoyed several years of close friendship. Although superficially very different - Tessa is married to glamorous film star Sebastian while Sally's husband Nick is his accountant - they feel as close as sisters. Warm-hearted Tessa is content to be a home maker, but Sally yearns for more. With war comes change - by 1940 both Nick and Sebastian have volunteered for the armed forces and Sally has landed a job translating foreign radio broadcasts. None of them imagines how anything other than war could shape their destiny, but nothing prepares them for the unexpected challenges and heartache peacetime will also bring...
