“So far it was pretty much like every Friday, except for that halter-top of hers and the fact that I’d made my move with Blake, finally, and the fact that in three days she’d find out if she’d get what she’d wanted ever since I’d known her--no, longer--ever since she was a kid maybe--and that was to be accepted at Bryn Mawr College, like her idol, Katherine Hepburn.
“When she was a kid, she once told me, first she wanted to be a pro baseball player and secondly she wanted to be a priest. She couldn’t be either of those because she was a girl, and she said she wasn’t going to let anyone stop her from being an actress. She acted in all the school plays, and as far as she was concerned the next step was to get into Bryn Mawr College. She’d know by Monday, three days away.”
That’s Jackson Redding just before the spring weekend that he’d remember for the rest of his life. He’s known Blake for years and makes fun of himself for his devotion to her, but also hopes she’ll come around to him. He knows she likes Jim Brooks, who regularly visits the catering shop where he and Blake both work. And he knows it’s all going to play out this weekend, right before college acceptance letters are due to arrive.
