Descripción

After the tragic loss of her mother, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews finds herself struggling to cope with grief and her sense of isolation. In an attempt to escape her overwhelming feelings, she decides to attend a residential program at a prestigious university. However, what begins as a quest for solace turns quickly into a journey of self-discovery and supernatural intrigue.

At the university, Bree uncovers a hidden society deeply entrenched in Arthurian legend and magic. As she immerses herself in this enigmatic world, she grapples with not only her own heritage but also the haunting memories of her mother. This duality leads Bree on a perilous path where she must confront both ancient forces and her own emotional turmoil.

Bree's quest for the truth reveals long-buried secrets and challenges her to embrace her identity in a world marked by both danger and enchantment. As she bonds with unexpected allies, her journey evolves into one of power, resilience, and the quest for revenge against those who wronged her. In the end, Bree must navigate the complexities of legacy and loss, all while harnessing the magic that lies within her.

this has sat on my physical tbr for literal YEARS and i started the audiobook on a whim ... then finished it in less than 36 hours 🧍🏼‍♀️ guys idk what crack was in that audio but i could not stop listening!!!while a phenomenal fantasy and dark academia, this is so much more than surface level entertainment. we dive deep into the effects of grief and its aftermath, saw our main character experience racism (and sexism eugh we hate men) as a black girl in the south in a predominantly white secret society full of old money assholes, and even got a lil found family too!! not to mention a love triangle where both guys feel like they could be such great options for bree, like a true love triangle in a ya fantasy? who is she!!! also team selwyn in case anyone was wondering 😛i loved learning the history and lore of the legendborn society, it’s based on arthur and the twelve (?) knights, which i've heard of but never really knew anything about, so it was super interesting to learn about the story not just in the context of the book but also in “real” life. the magic system was just so unique and unlike anything i’ve read before, which is saying a lot as someone who’s a fantasy reader before anything else. so fun and engaging and refreshingly new.i will say i’m not feeling on the edge of my seat for the next book despite that massive plot twist and cliffhanger? i’m curious to see where the story goes and probably will continue the series, but idk i was expecting this to, like, take over my life and leave me wanting for the sequel so badly that i couldn’t even look at another book, you know? but yeah no, i do want answers eventually so someone make sure i don’t wait another few years to continue #lol 🫣

This is the second review for an Arthurian story I've written today, and unlike the first, all my hopes were met and more. I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did. It came up slowly on me. It starts much like YA urban fantasy starts and takes that beginning to a place I didn't realize it could go. It took me a while to get into the book completely--I felt like I didn't have the information that I wanted to keep things going for a bit, and the main character was dealing with a lot of emotions that, while obviously valid, were kind of rough to read through. Losing someone important to you hurts, and when well-written, it hurts the reader. Once the plot takes off, it managed to surprise me. Not just in how it incorporated Arthuriana, but in how it met headlong the problems of such a story and a legacy carried down through the South. It's a brutal story where it needs to be, and that's part of what makes it so wonderful. The story isn't over, and I'm excited to see where it goes next and to see what else comes out. I feel like it's a story about not just heroes, but about the people who got left behind, and I feel like, as in a proper Arthurian story, justice will be served eventually.
