Descripción

Set in Caithness and Orkney, in the north of Scotland, during the twelfth century, Longship presents a vivid, imaginative picture of Viking society in transition. The central character is Snorri Hakonsson. In his old age, inspired by news of the writing of sagas in Iceland, Snorri decides to write the story of his own life and especially his adventures as a follower of his cousin, Svein Asleifarson. Svein is an historical figure whose exploits are recorded in Orkneyinga Saga and who has the reputation of being one of the last Norsemen to go raiding in the old viking manner. As a boy and young man, Snorri abandons education as a priest to sail with Svein. He takes part in a number of raids and battles, and acquires a growing reputation as a bard, celebrating the courage and adventures of his cousin. He marries Aud and sets up his household on land granted to him by Svein. Through his loyalty to his chief, Snorri becomes involved in the political struggles of the earls of Orkney to secure and retain their position. Tragedy leads him to tire of raiding and feuding but he finds it difficult to break away from his old obligations.
